SUNDOWNERS- You’re the Chef

You’re the Chef is a cooking program designed to help children develop the skills and confidence necessary for them to prepare healthy and tasty recipes emphasizing vegetables and fruit. This summer at Sundowners we have engaged children 6 to 12 years old to participate in this six (6) week program at all of our locations. Children will select, prepare, chop and taste a variety of healthy foods including fruits and vegetables for their snacks and meals. The You’re the Chef program was developed by the Health Unit and is promoted through our local Windsor-Essex County Health Unit. Our centre cooks attended a half-day leader training session led by a Registered Dietitian from the Health Unit. This leader worked with our cooks to plan when, where and how the You’re the Chef would run at each location. Cook leaders received a training manual with the instructions and forms needed to run the program. The Cooks learned to customize the You’re the Chef sessions by choosing recipes and activities that fit the age range of the children and that are age appropriate during each session. All participants will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the six week program.

You’re the Chef will teach children how to:

  1. Use kitchen equipment
  2. Follow recipes
  3. Safely prepare food
  4. Include more veggies and fruit into meals and snacks

Nutrition and food group specific criteria is based on the Canada’s Food Guide! 078
