Clay Beads
Combine a ½ cup of cold water. 1/3 cup cornstarch and 2/3 cup of sand in a medium bowl.
To make different coloured beads:
- Evenly divide the mixture into several bowls, then add food colouring until the desired shade is reached.
- Cook each colour in a non-stick saucepan over low to medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens (about 1 to 2 minutes).
- Spoon the clays into separate bowls, cover each with a damp cloth, and allow them to cool.
- Now you can roll, cut and shape the clay into interesting beads. (Use the tines of a fork to imprint detail or patterns)
- Push a toothpick through the centre of each bead to make a hole for stringing, then set the beads in a warm dry place until they have thoroughly dried, usually one or two days.
- When you are ready to string the beads, cut a length of dental floss long enough to fit loosely over your head when tied in a loop. Tape one end to an opened paper clip and, holding the other end, thread the beads onto the floss and tie the ends together.
- The beads are now ready to wear. (Note: Keep the beads from getting wet, as they will break apart.)
